Snake

Guide the snake around a 20 × 20 grid, collect gold coins and keep growing without crashing into the walls or your own tail. Every coin makes the snake longer and a little faster.

How to play Snake

You control the head of a snake that moves one square at a time across the board. A gold coin appears on a random empty square. Steer into it and the snake eats it, grows by one segment and earns 10 points. A new coin then appears somewhere else.

The round ends as soon as the head touches one of the four walls or any part of the snake's own body. Because the snake gets longer with every coin, the board slowly fills up and planning your route becomes the real challenge.

Tips for a higher score

  • Hug the edges early. While the snake is short, travel along the outside of the board. That leaves the middle open for later, when you need room to turn.
  • Think in loops. Experienced players sweep the board in long back-and-forth rows. It is slower, but the snake can never trap itself.
  • Do not chase every coin directly. If the straight path leads into a dead end, take the long way around.
  • Watch the speed. The game speeds up with each coin until it reaches its top speed, so your early moves are the easiest place to set up a safe pattern.

About this version

Snake games date back to the 1976 arcade title Blockade and became famous on mobile phones in the late 1990s. The idea is simple enough that thousands of versions exist. Ours is written from scratch in HTML5 canvas and plain JavaScript, so it loads instantly, runs offline once the page is open and works the same on a laptop or a phone.
